Reddit Is Now on 4 in 10 Desktops (And Most of Us Still Ignore It)

Reddit reached 41.6% of desktop users in June 2026, up from 29.4% in April 2025. Twelve percentage points of the entire desktop population picked up Reddit in fourteen months, and it has held a top-six position among the domains people visit after a search for over a year.

I have been treating Reddit as a place my clients’ customers occasionally end up. On these numbers it is closer to a place they live.

The same Q2 dataset shows that navigational searches are falling while research queries rise, and that search queries have grown longer for four straight quarters. Reddit sits where those changes meet: people arrive with a specific problem and want an answer from someone who has already dealt with it.

Key takeaways

  • Reddit grew from 29.4% to 41.6% of desktop users between April 2025 and June 2026, one of the largest audience gains of any platform tracked.
  • It held a top-six position among US search destination domains across the whole period, alongside YouTube, Amazon, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Instagram.
  • Searches per Reddit user softened to 3.6 by June, so the platform added people faster than it added activity per person.
  • Reddit fell from #6 to #10 among destinations visited from AI tools, which points the opposite direction from its search performance.

How fast that actually is

Audience share numbers are easy to skim past, so it helps to convert. Going from 29.4% to 41.6% of desktop users means Reddit went from roughly three in ten desktops to roughly four in ten in a little over a year.

Growth like that is unusual for a mature platform. Reddit turned twenty this decade and already captured a large share of its addressable market, which is normally where audience curves flatten rather than steepen.

Its position among search destinations held steady through the same period, sitting in the top six alongside YouTube, Amazon, Wikipedia, Facebook, and Instagram. Those are the six places desktop searchers end up most often, and Reddit is the only one of them that is mostly written by unpaid strangers.

The wrinkle in the growth

Searches per Reddit user fell to 3.6 by June even as the audience expanded. More people, each doing slightly less searching on the platform itself.

That fits a specific pattern, and it is the one that matters for anyone trying to be found. If people were adopting Reddit as a destination they browse, per-user activity would climb with the audience. If instead they are arriving from Google, reading one thread, and leaving, the audience grows while per-user search stays flat or falls.

The second pattern is what the numbers look like. Reddit is functioning less as a social network people visit and more as a layer of the search results, which is roughly how a lot of us actually use it.

That matches another Q2 result: Google kept more post-search clicks inside its own properties. Reddit can gain reach through search while an independent site loses that click opportunity.

Its position in AI answers went the other way

Among domains visited from AI tools, Reddit dropped from #6 to #10 in the US over the year. In Europe it fell in those rankings too, alongside Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn.

That is a genuine divergence and I would not paper over it. Reddit is gaining as a search destination and losing as an AI destination at the same time.

The most plausible reading is that AI tools are answering directly rather than sending people onward, which shows up across the whole reference category. Wikipedia dropped out of the AI top fifteen entirely and NIH slid from #8 to #15. An assistant that has read Reddit does not need to send you there, and that erosion of the referral layer is the pattern underneath all of it.

That result fits the broader AI referral traffic map. Assistants increasingly send users to other assistants while reference and social sites lose rank.

What this means if you run a business

The practical version is that Reddit threads are competing with your pages for the same queries, and often winning, because a real person describing a real experience is what a lot of searchers came for.

You cannot outrank that with a better landing page. The thread wins because it is a thread. What you can do is be in it, which is a different activity than publishing, and one most of us in this industry are bad at because it does not scale and cannot be delegated to a content calendar.

There is also a defensive angle. If your industry has an active subreddit, the discussion about your category is already happening, and searching your own business name there is a five-minute exercise that occasionally turns up something you would rather have known about.

That check belongs beside AI visibility tracking, because Reddit and answer engines can describe a brand before either one sends a click.

How to show up without getting thrown out

Reddit is unusually good at detecting and removing marketing, and the penalty for getting it wrong lands on the brand rather than just the account. So the bar is genuinely higher than on other platforms.

What works is answering questions in your area of expertise without linking anywhere, with your affiliation stated plainly if it is relevant. A contractor explaining why a quote came in at a certain number is useful, gets upvoted, and is exactly the content that later shows up in someone’s search results.

What does not work is the thing that feels efficient: dropping a link, posting the same answer across subreddits, or writing in the register of a blog post. I have watched people try all three and the failure is fast and public.

The underlying skill is the same one that makes content get cited anywhere, which is answering the actual question in plain language rather than positioning around it. That is the argument in getting cited by AI as a service business, and Reddit is a much less forgiving place to practice it.

What this data does not cover

These are desktop figures. Reddit skews heavily toward mobile app usage, so its real reach is larger than a desktop panel can see, and the same caveat applies more severely to platforms like Threads that barely register on desktop at all.

User share also measures reach rather than attention. Four in ten desktops touching Reddit at some point in a month is not four in ten people reading it daily, and I would not stretch the number further than it goes.

FAQ

How much has Reddit grown?
Reddit grew from 29.4% of desktop users in April 2025 to 41.6% in June 2026, a gain of twelve percentage points in fourteen months. It also held a top-six position among the domains people visit after a search throughout that period.
Why do Reddit threads rank so well?
Because a lot of searches are asking what a real person experienced, and a thread answers that better than a commercial page can. As search intent has shifted toward informational and commercial research queries, the kind of content Reddit holds has become a closer match for what people are asking.
Is Reddit still a major source for AI answers?
Its position as a destination people click through to from AI tools fell from #6 to #10 in the US during the year, and it declined in Europe too. That measures referrals rather than whether AI models draw on Reddit content, and the same decline hit Wikipedia and other reference sites, which points to assistants answering directly instead of passing users along.
Should my business post on Reddit?
Participate rather than post. Answering questions in your area of expertise, without links and with your affiliation stated if relevant, is what communities accept and what later surfaces in search. Link drops and repeated cross-posting get removed quickly and the damage attaches to the brand.
Does this include Reddit’s mobile app users?
No. These figures come from a desktop clickstream panel, and Reddit skews heavily toward mobile app usage. Its actual reach is larger than these numbers show, so treat 41.6% as a floor rather than a ceiling.

A platform on four in ten desktops, sitting in the top six search destinations, mostly written by people with no commercial motive at all. I do not have a tidy strategy for that, and I am fairly sure the businesses doing well there are not running one either.
